On Tuesday, the Canadian Health Agency said there were more than 30,000 people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the virus began to spread in the country on Oct. 1.
Those numbers, while still low, still include more than 12,000 Canadians who have contracted the virus in the past week.
Those people are among the 1.3 million people who will now have to leave the country by the end of November, the agency said.
The numbers have been a surprise to many.
On Monday, the Health Minister’s office issued a statement that said the province will provide a more extensive and timely response to those who have not yet left.
On Tuesday afternoon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office tweeted a statement saying it was the government’s position that all Canadians who can safely return home will be provided with the most comprehensive and timely information possible.
The Canadian Association of Chief Executives says more than half of the country’s health-care workers are not vaccinated against COVID.
The organization is calling on the government to put the issue on the table as soon as possible.
It said in a statement on Tuesday that it is concerned the government has not been forthcoming on the details of how the government plans to respond to COVID as well as on the cost of providing that information to Canadians.
“This is the kind of response that we expect when a government is facing an urgent health emergency, and this response should include an immediate timeline for the return of all Canadians with symptoms and the appropriate measures to ensure all Canadians are given the most effective, timely and cost-effective medical care,” the group said.
“In the wake of the devastating coronavirus pandemic, it is critically important that our health- care system is fully staffed, available and fully prepared for the next pandemic.”
