New York, NY — The average American’s risk of developing dental caries increases with age, a new study says.
The findings suggest that older adults may have the highest rates of dental cariousness and may need to take preventive measures to prevent tooth decay.
The research, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, examined dental cariosis in 7,843 participants aged 45 and over.
It found that people aged 45 to 64 had a median dental cariogenic score of 3.9.
That’s 1.9 points higher than the median for the US population as a whole.
Researchers also found that those who had higher dental cariology scores were more likely to have dental cavities that required surgery.
The study’s authors noted that more research is needed to determine the causes of dental health issues and how they can be managed.
The authors suggest that dental care and dental hygiene education be given to all individuals who have dental problems, as well as to individuals with a higher risk of dental disease.
They also note that preventive measures, including oral hygiene and hygiene cleaning, may prevent dental carial diseases in older adults.
The U.S. has one of the highest caries rates in the world, with more than 80 percent of the population living in areas with high levels of caries.
